Creative Jobs Keep Teens Close to Home
Country: India
Darjeeling is in the foothills of the Himalayas in northeast India and is famous for producing fine teas. Tea estates are enormous and employ roughly 25% of the local population. Tea workers earn one of the lowest wage rates in India's formal economy, but the jobs are highly desirable because there are few other employment options in the area. With access to high school education extremely limited, and job opportunities very scarce, many teens migrate to cities where they are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Mercy Corps has partnered with Starbucks/Tazo to create employment opportunities for these youth through the Community Health and Advancement Initiative (CHAI) Project.
